Whenever she’s been out spending her pension on stack-heeled shoes and outlandish handbags (and my long-suffering dad is feeling another funny turn coming on) my mum has a great Northern saying: ‘There’s no pockets in shrouds’. Roughly translated, why hoard your money away like a Scrooge all your life when there’s fun to be had in spending it? And while there are indeed no pockets in shrouds – or cash left in my dad’s bank account – this carefree attitude certainly isn’t an old-fashioned one. In fact, from November you’ll be able to see the burial treasures of one whose ancient funeral bandages contained more than a hundred pieces of jaw-dropping jewellery.
From the 15th, King Tutankhamun and his incredible treasures will be bringing a darkly glamorous Egyptian flavour to the O2 dome in London. Take a look at the statues that guarded his legendary tomb, along with some of the gold items that were wrapped in the linen around his mummy. When it comes to saving or spending, I’m definitely with my own mummy on this one.
